Beachcombers

Living near the beach offers an artist many opportunities to capture the expressions of natural bodies in activity. I view these unabashed figures as choreography, in the same way dance companies express movement through music. On the beach these figures move in sunlight, an artist’s medium, to walk, run, throw disks or footballs, gyrate with gymnastics and more. In this painting, figures of women walk the beach for exercise and shell collecting, each one expressing her distinct personality and attitude. As a group, their stride creates movement along the canvas which is a ballet of sorts, graceful, simple and expressive.
