An Alfresco Luncheon
An Alfresco Luncheon (28x20, oil on linen) is a down-view of one of Boston's outdoor restaurants that offer dining below street level. I like the way the arrangement of the woman and waiter form a circular composition in this painting, making them the center within the picture plane. Follow the waiter's gaze to the glasses then to the woman's face and down her arm to the table and around the lower man's hat to the woman in blue at the bottom, then finally back up the brown apron to the waiter again. The brown color of tiles and the waiter's apron and foreground woman's brown hair give the scene a soft, sepia tone that helps accentuate the light streaming from above. There are a lot of parts to this painting, which made it a challenge. But all-in-all, I'm happy with the way it came out.
