Old Reliable

This man in an old row boat drifted by me out of nowhere from behind bigger boats moored in the harbor. He looked up at me watching him, smiled and skillfully manipulated his small boat as if it were an extension of himself. I watched him for a while, taking visual notes, and realized that I was looking at a seasoned sailor, who probably had been on the water since childhood; and by the looks of him, that was many years ago. He seemed confident with who he is and what he apparently does every day of life. And it struck me that he and the boat he sat in were one in the same, old yet reliable, each knowing their purpose. How many of us can say that these days?

From an artistically visual perspective, I was drawn to the water's ripples, and the way they reflected the clear blue sky above. And the way the boat and man cast jagged, rippled images in the water, creating circles where the new oars dipped in. I like the simplicity of this scene and the way it says a lot through so little.
