This man sat alone on a side street playing his accordion softly. The case sitting on the ground had little money in it. And he didn't bother to notice when I threw in a couple of coins. I stood back to watch his nimble fingers dance along the keyboard, and listened to the sighing pitch of music huff as he pumped the bellows in and out. The melody was haunting, mesmerizing and held me there, and made me wonder why he chose to play his accordion on a quiet street that had so little foot traffic, especially if he was playing for coins? After a while it came to me: He didn't care how much money he collected. He was playing for himself and anyone who cared to stop and listen. The spare change was on the side.
