The interior of this restaurant catches the staff at a time of setting up the dining room. At this early stage, the unadorned room, bathed in midday sunlight, bares all its common imperfections. This period of preparation reminds me of set design, where the "stage" is transformed from an empty, everyday room into an ambiance of intimacy. The warm lapping glow of candlelight, fine cloth texture, wafting aromas, tinkling silverware are all formulated for the pleasure for an expectant "audience". Dining is a play of sorts created to satisfy our fantasy expectations. All part of the admission price. Our responses to nice restaurants are the same ones that compel me to paint them: Colorful tablecloths, sparkling glasses, gleaming silverware, wall decor like accoutrements, wood furniture, table dressings, and patterned carpeting--all stage design. So setting up a dining room is putting on its makeup and dressing up in costume.
