This painting of storefronts on Boston's prestigious Newbury Street is a study in contrasts: between yesteryear and today; between the old architecture of America's Colonial past against the haute couture of 2012; between the wild hot oranges and yellows of downstairs against the conservative, muted fashion tones above. These contrasts make me reflect on the surprising twists and turns our American culture has taken since its first democratic steps in 1776. And how comforting it is to see the past is still with us, because you can't know where you're going unless you know where you've been.
