Quiet Conversation
This small outdoor cafe, located on Newbury Street in Boston, sits below street level to provide shelter from the bustling sidewalk and street traffic passing overhead. What caught my attention to this scene was the intimacy of the environment. A sense of "place" is a frequent theme in my paintings, and this one has it. Shade from overhead umbrellas blankets the air to create a subdued atmosphere, pierced here and there by the sun flaring on parts of tables and chairs and brick. The silver bowl in the forefront sparkles like jewel against an opaque background, sweating from the warmth of the day while cradling bottles of wine. Dabs of reflections suggest what might lie beyond the tranquility and intimacy of this enclave, where two men sit in the heart of the city, engaged in a private moment of quiet conversation.
