The current series of paintings I'm exploring focuses on Field Hands working a farm cooperative nearby where I live. In this image of a man holding a plant carrier, I was drawn to his red shirt against a field of light green grass of early spring, and the way sunlight moves around the folds. The young shoots of the plants are seen planted beneath a sheet of black plastic (to keep weed growth to a minimum). There are several layers of depth here: foreground, middle ground, background field and a treeline in the distance on a hilltop. I also wanted to capture the gate of this man's walk. It says a lot about his character: Confident, knowledgeable and experienced, he seems to be in thought. He seems also to be in a calm and steady frame of mind. Unless I'm reading too much into this, it seems that my interpretation is true, based on what I know about the Zen-like quality of working the earth, or being connected to nature in some way.
