Afternoon Lunch

The composition of this painting is guided by the color of the women's shirts (from violet on the left to red and then orange), which forms a semicircular sweep from left to right, and leading into the center of the painting. The umbrellas above frame the painting along the top while at the bottom, the darker tones of shade and metal furniture allow entry into the center lighted area. The chairs contribute to moving the eye into the painting, and add interest by breaking up larger shapes into smaller individual ones, such as the clothing, whose folds add interest in their flowing and modulating color.
