The Old Neighborhood

This oil painting of the North End in Boston created a challenge, to capture the variety of textures making up the structures. But it's also what drew me to this scene. These many materials of glass, reflections, wood, sky, cloth, stone and metal are what actually create the design of the picture.

What also contributes is the way the colors of the orange banners and orange brick compliment each other. Same goes for the blue awning and blue apron of the restaurant manager rounding the corner to check on his delivery. He's wearing black, which coincides with the black awning above. So, there's a harmony of colors within the diversity of textures.

This is a rich scene, to me, especially because of the old character of the place, even down to the cobblestones peeking through the asphalt on the bottom left. Most places have their "old town." The smells and the sight of days-past give character to the place, and sort of transport you back in time to another era. Click on the image for a closer look.
